The impact an event such as this has on the environment and what is being done to offset it is an important question.
There are two main sources of emissions
We don't hold direct information as to our primary or secondary sources of emissions as we are a small local charity however we can refer to 3rd party sources (FOI - London New Year Fireworks) where this information has been published for another larger event.
The actual CO2 impact from the main launch (primary emissions) is relatively low, although still measured in kgs.
In terms of direct steps we as an organisation take, we have supported the planting of numerous trees at the fireworks site via The Friends of King George V over the previous years. Following the 2023 event we donated an additional £2500 to support the planting of additional saplings on the event site.
The fire site is reseeded each year with wildflowers (which look pretty in the summer) and we sponsor several planters around Downend to add a splash of green. Each year around two tonnes of coarse sand is added to the hill by the play park to aid drainage and ensure regrowth of the grass.
Any further impact to the site is assessed with South Gloucs council and reinstatement works carried out if necessary.
Of course we can always do more so any suggestions are welcome, especially if it helps any local good causes at the same time. Please contact us @ hello@downendrt.co.uk with any ideas.
The secondary emissions (people travelling to the event) however are far more significant, this is the main challenge for a public event such as the Downend Round Table Fireworks.
We have for years advocated that people walk to the show, however as it has become larger and drawn a crowd from a wider catchment area this is less feasible.
We publish public transport information but we cannot dictate to people as to how to arrive at the event.
All rubbish on site is collected and either pre-sorted into recycling bins by members of the public or post-sorted by our waste handler.
Hope this helps and sparks more conversation on the topic, we can all help by walking to the event, reusing or recycling wherever possible and any other ideas you may have to help us improve.
